Blame work, blame the BF, blame life.

Dreaming of Paris, but first...
I AM GOING TO SF FOR MY BIRTHDAY! YAY!
So exciting! Dunnoe why the BF suddenly said: Erm, why don;t we go to SF for your bday?
Then I sprung out of my seat, and immediately searched for flights.
It started out as taking the day off for my bday which is falling on wednesday this year. I took only wednesday off as I don;t believe anyone should work on their bday. But the BF took wed through fri, and I was like: it's not even your bday. Then he decided not to waste it by sitting around at home, so YAY!
I have been trying to get him to go visit with me for a while. I've been away for 3+ years, but I'm pretty confident that I can remember the buses to take to the Ferry building so I can have a Miette cupcake (or three) on my special day. I can't wait to see my friends, breathe in the cool crisp bay air and just dance in this fabulous city I used to call Home.
I'll def. write about my trip after I'm back.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Next up, is planning for Paris. I always wanted to go there. I would move there in a heartbeat once I can figure how to speak French and manage a stylish lifestyle there (Any French royalty interested in a cute Asian gf?).
this trip should happen later this fall. Will keep you posted. In the meantime, I have been living a very modest lifestyle. Even when I went shopping last Saturday, by myself, with no BF nagging at me, I DIDN'T BUY ANYTHING!!!!!!!
sighz, I have grown up.
I promise
this blog is not dead. the owner is just lazy.
Plus I had a refill at the dentist today. Refill—took out old cavity fillings and replaced with new shiny cosmetic white plastic based ones. So that when I yell at someone, they don't focus on the visibly awful black mercury fillings in my last few Molar teeth I had since I was a child.
Speaking of which, I totally cannot erased the memory of our Primary school dentist. That dingy so-called dental office located in the other school next door always smells musky. Filled with totally out dated equipment (I knew even when I was a kid as the same loathsome chair was never upgraded for like 6 years) and dizzy ceiling lights. I think she is not even a dentist. She seemed more like a dental hygienist who hates kids. I know she hates kids because she doesn't care how we feel. She doesn't need our parents' consent to do any dental work on us, which I think is total BULLSHIT.
She extracts our tooth whenever she think is appropriate and she gives us POISONOUS MERCURY cavity fillings without thinking twice. How do I know? I went to a dentist in USA a few years ago who told me:
"You should change those fillings."
"Why?" I asked.
"They look like they are starting to chip off on the edges. They are probably old right? And they are mercury-based."
"That sounds poisonous!"
"They were only poisonous when they first put it in... ..."
Inside voice: WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!
He continued:"Also, I can't even just throw them away. By law, I have to dispose of them in a safe procedure because of the mercury."
Inside voice: 1000000000 x WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!
I know now that I am a victim of a psycho dentist hygienist, who probably wasn't smart enough to be a real dentist, hated kids and chose to freaking drill into our teeth like there is no tomorrow. My cavities were probably not even alarming at all. But I was just unfortunate. I was poisoned as a child and maybe, I feel like going back to the country, sue the Ministry for negligence. The mercury had probably entered my blood stream and cause some deficiency that I will find out later in my life. Which will probably be too late.
The sad truth is, I wasn't the only victim.
Restaurant week in Las Vegas is a great idea
In Las Vegas, I keep telling myself that I should maximize my time here by doing everything Vegas. I kinda overdid it when I had that huge influx of visitors during my first year here. It's like everyone thinks: oh we have to visit you there now!
So before my time (and money) runs out in Sin City, I'm glad that I've finally tried Restaurant Week, organized for Three Square, a charity/community to help out the starving by stuffing ourselves with great food, in great restaurants, at great affordable prices.
We could only pick ONE place out of the extensive and tasty list of participating restaurants, and we (I) picked Fleur de Lys!!!
At USD$50.10 per head (not including tax, tips and/or drinks), the Prixe Fix menu didn't seem like we'll be short-changed for paying half of what a normal meal would be. Plus my fellow colleague/foodie gave the encouraging nod. Since there is only 2 choices of each of the 3-course menu, the bf and I can practically try everything.
So we dressed up fancy, dropped off the little monster, parked, arrived early, played the slot machine, went back, got seated, had a drink or two and BAM! When I first tasted my Truffled Onion Soup, I thought I would never ever taste a better soup than that again. it surprisingly doesn't taste much like onions, I thought there was duck in there but I can't taste it either. I can taste the Truffles which is yummy and definitely the soup is just good. I would even drink it if someone tells me that it's made with rat's tail. Yes, it's worth the drawback after, if ever.
So they serve you with an empty bowl first, with only the truffles, then they pour the creamy yummy soup in, in front of you. The soup plate has a little bottom pit and he poured it to the brim, that's why it looks like it's flat on the surface.
The bf had the (raw)salmon salad which is so fresh and pure, you can taste the smooth silky texture of the fish. That's the way to do raw fish right.
Next are the entreés. I had the Halibut for the hell-of-it (heehee) and the bf had the something steak. Boy am I glad I got the Halibut!!! It was served in the beautiful custom plate and the chef purposely presented the dish in a way to complement the flower design on the plate. Le Sigh.
And what else can I say? The fish is so fresh and tender, lightly salted and seared on one side. The sauce is light, with carrots, corns, some beans and perfectly enhanced the gentle taste of the fish. It was kinda South-western, yet I don't know. Can't find words to describe.
The bf had the steak, which was good, but forgettable. It had the smallest and cutest baked potatoes I've ever seen.
Next up dessert. We were both stuffffffffed. We finish everything and I have to say that the servings were pretty impressive. I was kinda worried that the bf would need a stop at Burger King right after because fine dining are known to be pretty small portioned. But did you see my fish??? It was ginormously fabulous! Plus I tried all 3 kinds of bread rolls they offered. Once again, I ate more than my date.
There wasn't a choice for the dessert, so chocolate soufflé it was. Great for chocolate lovers and even greater for me as their chocolate sauce was just perfectly semi-sweet. Except that I gave the bf my mocha ice-cream since I'm not a fan of coffee. The soufflé was so fluffy (I'm gonna die!!!), freshly-made, perfect, with the chocolate sauce. YUMS.
So the order of my favorite dish actually follows the order of how they were served. I read online that the soup alone usually costs USD$20, which I think I might just go get it another day on a whim. Or to cheer up an otherwise gloomy day (which are plenty recently due to work).
We ended the night with a short round of slot play where I ended up leaving the hot seat of the Sex and the City machine with $30, instead of the $5 I started with. Small YAY. (Mmmmmm that could buy me that bowl of soup again......)
It's a long weekend, with Labor Day holiday occuring on Monday. It turns out I might have to work again (having to work today-saturday). I hope I get those comp days. Or I'll just give myself some when the rest of my clan arrives. Woohoo!
I don't know if you know much about sugar
It's funny how we are all subjected to the 'right' choice and when we have the 'real' choice, it's like a special occasion and for this instance, it tasted interesting.
There's so much going on right now. So tired and busy and weak. will chat with ya another day.
pretending I'm busy
Because I just wanna be in denial and avoid the crap that really bothers me.
Today at the office pantry, while exchanging conventionally boring 'hellos' and 'how are yous', another colleague and I realized we were both very mentally exhausted and did not try to pretend to be all cheerful. Sigh.
I also realize that I've lost a certain drive for my life. I don't feel like fighting anymore. No, I'm not giving up on my life, I just want, you know, to live in a peaceful and happy environment, everyday. I don't want to go to work and sulk and pick fights with people on silly little things like font sizes and alignment of graphics. As much as I've tried to avoid the drama, I don't think I ever can because working in an ad agency itself is a self-stirring-shit drama ditch.
ok stop rant. show pictures ok?
Have you had these cartwheels before? OMG. They are like little round angelic paragons of the potato heaven from somewhere up there or Malaysia. So happy that meinah went crazy/superbly generous and brought me SEVEN packets of these treasure snacks for me when she visited a while ago. Nom nom nom...........
Post X'mas sales leads to cheap(er) yummy foods!
These are SUPER yummy. If you like sucking peppermint candy canes, this is 10 times better! oh well, anything coated with chocolate makes it better.
I have been wanting to grab an Italian Panettone this X'mas ever since I watched Giada de Laurentiis of Food Network talk about her favourite food of all, the Panettone Milanese from Emporio Rulli-LarkspurYums! And ironically, I lived in San Francisco for so many years and never knew about them until now, when I have moved away. However I didn't order from them, I got my Panettone from a href="http://www.williams-sonoma.com/">Williams Sonoma. On sale! Two days after X'mas! LOL. It still tasted really good.The best time to shop is after X'mas. Remember this later this year!
Something's baking in the oven!
Spent the entire evening preparing two batchs of cookies for the annual holiday cookie exchange thingy at work. This year I organized it, so the organizer has to go all out to impress. Well, within my reach.....
Got the recipe for Cowboy Cookies. Seem to be pretty good with oatmeal, pecan, coconut and chunks of chocolate....sounds a lot eh? It is. Towards the end it was hard to mix coz of the chunkiness. Nevertheless they turned out great.
And I had to do two batch, one without nuts, so I appropriately renamed them Cowgirl Cookies. wahahahaha. I thought I was pretty smart and funny to think of that.
Contrary to popular belief,
I did actually have a nice group of local friends who are not Chinese at all, but accepted my invite to join me for a super nice Chinese New Year's eve reunion dinner.
The only Chinese thing about that night is me and the fact that it is Chinese New Year's Eve. Otherwise, we had Japanese food. Haha. There is the choice between Sukiyaki and Shabu-Shabu. I picked the former. And then Lissy had to break out into the song:" It's all because of you. I'm feeling sad and blue. You went away, now my love is just a rainy day......" Dude, do you guys remember this cover hit by 4 P.M. back in the hey days of the early 90s?
Anyways.
It was a little hard to DIY coz the pot was a little far from the table. My hands were getting tired pretty quick. But in the spirit of the festive season, I stopped complaining.
And the weird thing is we have to sit in a row. This is my right side of my friends. Below is the left side of the dinner. It was a bit inconvenience to chat. But we just yell around.
I'm quite happy and grateful.
Will blog more later.
I guess I'm guilty of neglecting this blog. Well, the good reason behind it is that I was entirely enjoying my vacation back home to care about anything else—having yummy lunch/dinner at the hawker centers with my family, mass-texting to girlfriends about clubbing plans at night, taking puppy for walks, celebrating holidays/marriage, ogling at a strange boy... ...oh well, you know how that works.
It's not that bad lah~
Aiyoh.
I got all those concerned questions about the damage I've done during this past Black Friday. It's bad, but considering I haven't bought much for myself lately, it's nothing! You should have seen me last year!
The biggie is this Coach leather bag. I just seen it at the full price retail store for USD498 before tax. I thought: Hell no! No matter how much I loved it and the leather was soft and the color is my favorite. Hell no!
Then of course, for the Thanksgiving sale, it went to the outlet within a few days and was marked way way way lower than the retail price. I HAD TO........... Mom! I could have bought a few and it won't even be more than the retail price.
Nice right? Also bought a Diesel underwear for 8 bucks, Ted Baker wide leather belt for 32 and some gifts. It really is the best time to shop.
Back to the real purpose of Thanksgiving.
Apple keep the turket moist, she said.
Went to my friend Lissy's house to crash her family dinner and oh boy! Her turkey was the best home-cooked one I ever had!!!! (sorry to whoever but really!) It was moist and totally cooked (which is the problem for a lot of people) and the stuffing and the yummy garlic mashed potato!!!!! Everything was made by her. Dang!
And then I brought my store-bought pies—French Apple and Pecan. At least I made the effort!
Hope she will let her hubby bring the leftovers to work (she used to, but now only her hubby works in the same agency with me).
Then we went to the new casino near her place and I was desperately trying to win some shopping money. However, two lucky things had happened other than that.
1. I dropped my wallet and didn't realise it until 20 minutes later!!!! It was still lying on the floor, under the Pai Gow table, amongst the chairs and legs when I went back for it. I was sitting there watching my friend play earlier on. This is a miracle at a casino you know that.
2. I broke even after playing at the roulette table for almost 3 hours. I was down to my last 5 bucks but I won back my money (60 bucks) slowly and left. I got 2 drinks for free.
There was a white guy who just kept buying 23. Lissy won like 3 times when it hit 5 coz' she buys that number everytime. The dealer was hitting the same number twice in a row for like 6-8 times. There was a black guy who looks like Kanye west who will play and leave then come back for like 3 times.
Roulette is my favorite game, because it's kinda random, but kinda have a pattern too. It's messy, dependent on luck but you can kinda read the trend of each dealer. Just like Life. I don't know what I'm saying anymore.
I'm gonna chill for the rest of the week.
We all like it.
Y'all know today is like the super duper auspicious day of the whole universe that will never repeat itself again, untill like 3008. Which, IMHO, will not happen at the rate we're destroying this pitiful planet.
Maybe in Mars. The future Martians can mark my words as they party up 8/8/3008. Please have a vanilla vodka shot for me ok?
Oh well~ Let's talk about something hilarious then.
Eggs. We know where they came from (or started … or was it the chicken?), so I won’t bore you with those details. Instead, here are some amazing facts and figures concerning the incredible, edible egg.
• First, a little nutrition information. The health value of the egg has been exhaustively debated over the past few decades (cholesterol content, whether one should just consume the whites, etc). But the facts remain: though the yolk makes up roughly 34% of an egg’s liquid weight, contains all of the fat and a bit less than half of the protein, it also contains a higher proportion of the egg’s vitamins, including B6 and B12, folic acid, pantothenic acid and thiamin. Vitamins A, D, E and K are exclusive to the yolk.
• Keeping eggs in cartons is the best way to keep them fresh. An egg’s shell is actually porous (with about 17,000 tiny individual pores) so that it absorbs flavors and odors around it.
• Here’s an “egg counter” for you: A hen requires 24 to 26 hours to produce an egg. Thirty minutes later, she starts all over again. There are nearly 280 million laying birds in the U.S., each of whom produces 250-300 eggs per year, totally around 75 billions eggs - about 10% of the world’s supply.
• At a slight 105 lbs, Sonya Thomas (pictured) holds the record for competitive eating in hard boiled eggs: 65 Hard Boiled Eggs in 6 minutes, 40 seconds!
• “Omelet King” Howard Helmer, Senior National Representative for the American Egg Board, holds three Guinness World Records for omelet making: fastest omelet-maker (427 omelets in 30 minutes); fastest single omelet (42 seconds from whole egg to omelet); and omelet flipping (30 flips in 34 seconds). My mornings would go a great deal faster with him on board.
• Humpty Dumpty may be the most famous egg … but is there evidence to support his being an egg at all? In the original nursery rhyme, there is no mention of Humpty’s egg-ness. While there are various versions of stories of what Humpty Dumpty may represent, the poem might have simply been a riddle whose answer was that Humpty was indeed an egg.
• An “Easter Egg” is often code to mean a surprise. “The first Imperial Easter egg was ordered in 1885 by Czar Alexander II. The monarch gave it to his wife, Maria Feodorovna. Inside it contained a surprise: a golden hen, a small ruby Easter egg, and a diamond replica of the Czar’s crown.” There are only 50 Imperial Easter Eggs in the world, and range in auction price from $80 million to $120 million in total. The most expensive Faberge egg was sold at a Christie’s auction in 2007 for £8.9 million ($16.5 million).
• And finally, for all those who wondered, there is no discernible difference in nutrition, taste, or any other factor than color between a brown egg and a white egg. The color difference is due to the specific breed of hen, according to the Egg Nutrition Center. Hens with white feathers and white earlobes will lay white eggs, whereas hens with red feathers and matching-colored earlobes give us brown eggs.
You know what I’m going to ask … what’s your favorite way to eat an egg?
It's about time
My good friend G calls me from Singapore every now and then to check on me. This past phone call she suddenly asked: "Have you been using the tea cup I bought you?" or something like that."Er.......I haven't. I'm washed it already, but I'm worried that I'll break it," I replied, or something like that.
"You should use it! Make a nice cuppa tea, put some biscuits on the side and relax! It's the weekend," she insisted, or something like that.
So there you go. I had to take a picture as evidence. I know she lurks silently behind the kooky words of this blog.
Thank you~
The chronicles of MaLing
Upon reading JW’s glorifying entry about MaLing—the recently-banned canned Luncheon meat in SG, I decided to seek it out in LV and try it for myself.
One thing I am concerned is, the label indicates the MaLing I’m going to buy is Made in Canada! Which instantly means to me that I’m going to experience a slightly different version. But, Thank God! I don’t think I want to eat unfamiliar meat from China. Because maybe even God doesn’t know what’s in it.
My first obstacle came about when I have to open the can. OK. I have a can opener but this can isn’t round. I found a somewhat clue on the bottom. It’s a tool looking thing that seems to be the key to opening the can.
I might be having a bimbo-moment, but in my defense, I rarely eat canned food in SG or here, I've never been a scout, so I really don’t know. I tried to be innovative and think of ways how this key will help, but I kinda broke it. In the end I opened the sides with my unadventurous can-opener and the rest is well, let’s just say I used primitive ways.
Since I’m feeling grouchy and lazy from my monthly lady’s situation, I re-use the same oil that I used to fry up some prawn Keropok I got from Bali just right before this (I realise I haven't blog about Bali).
The result is 2 nicely fried slices of luncheon meat. You can be publicly envious of me now.
But the question is… …would I eat MaLing again?
I think I will decide once I devoured this little plate. In the meantime, I have another burning question.
Doesn't the beloved MaLing can look great when recycled as a pen holder?
Muahahaha!
